NuvaRing is a flexible, transparent, and non-biodegradable ring made from ethylene vinylacetate copolymers and magnesium stearate. It is entirely latex-free. The ring has an outer diameter of 54 mm and a cross-sectional thickness of 4 mm.
Active Ingredients: Each ring contains 11.7 mg etonogestrel (a progestin) and 2.7 mg ethinyl estradiol (an estrogen).
Delivery Mechanism: Once inserted into the vagina, the ring continuously releases a low daily dose of 0.120 mg of etonogestrel and 0.015 mg of ethinyl estradiol directly into the bloodstream over a three-week period.
How it Works: The released hormones primary prevent pregnancy by stopping ovulation (the release of an egg from the ovaries). They also thicken cervical mucus to prevent sperm from entering the uterus and thin the uterine lining.
Usage & Administration
The product operates on a simple 4-week cycle managed entirely by the user:
Insertion: The user compresses the flexible ring and inserts it into the vagina. The exact placement or position inside the vagina is not critical for its effectiveness.
3 Weeks On: The ring must remain in place continuously for three consecutive weeks (21 days).
1 Week Off: The ring is removed at the end of the third week (on the same day of the week and roughly the same time it was inserted) for a one-week ring-free interval. A withdrawal bleed (similar to a period) typically occurs during this week.
Cycle Restart: Exactly seven days after removal, a new ring must be inserted to begin the next cycle.
Nuvaring: Side effects
Users of Nuvaring experience no or very rare side effects when using the ring. The rare side effects are: headache, nausea, respiratory tract infection, sinusitis, weight changes, etc. When users experience these side effects, they must immediately consult a doctor to check whether the use of Nuvaring is suitable for them according to their medical history.
