Description
Concerta Tablets
Concerta Extended-Release Tablets are a prescription central nervous system (CNS) stimulant containing methylphenidate hydrochloride. Manufactured by Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Concerta is engineered with a specialized Osmotic Controlled-Release Oral Delivery System (OROS technology) designed to deliver steady therapeutic coverage.
Technical Specifications & Strength
• Active Substance: Methylphenidate hydrochloride.
• Formulation Type: Extended-release (XR / OROS). The tablet does not dissolve traditionally. Instead, moisture from the digestive tract activates an internal osmotic pump, trickling medication steadily over approximately 10 to 12 hours.
Available Dosage Strengths:
• 18 mg (Capsule-shaped, yellow tablet, typically imprinted with “alza 18”).
• 27 mg (Capsule-shaped, gray tablet, typically imprinted with “alza 27”).
• 36 mg (Capsule-shaped, white tablet, typically imprinted with “alza 36”).
• 54 mg (Capsule-shaped, brownish-red tablet, typically imprinted with “alza 54”).
• Administration: Must be swallowed whole once daily in the morning with or without food. Tablets must never be crushed, chewed, or divided, as breaking the outer shell destroys the extended-release mechanism and releases the full dose immediately.
Primary Clinical Indications
• Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD): Indicated for the treatment of ADHD in pediatric patients (aged 6 years and older), adolescents, and adults up to age 65. It enhances focus, organizational skills, and impulse control by elevating dopamine and norepinephrine presence in key areas of the brain.
